The 2022 EuChemS Historical Landmark award was received by the Hospital of Pilgrims in Altafulla, Spain on the regional level, while on the European Level, this year’s awardee honours the legacy of two significant, interconnected researchers in Milan, Italy, and Mülheim, Germany.
The Hospital of Pilgrims in Altafulla, Tarragona, on the southern coast of Catalonia housed the laboratory of Antoni de Martí i Franquès in the 18th century, where he made significant scientific achievements in the field of atmospheric chemistry.
Karl Ziegler and Giulio Natta won a joint Nobel prize for their research on synthetic polymers. The Historical Landmark Award will jointly honour Ziegler’s historic laboratory building of the Max-Planck-Institut (MPI) für Kohlenforschung in Mülheim, Germany and the “Giulio Natta” Department of Chemistry, Materials and Chemical Engineering at the Politecnico in Milano, Italy.
