In her Editorial of the Nachrichten aus der Chemie, the membership magazine of the Gesellschaft Deutscher Chemiker, the German Chemical Society (GDCh), EuChemS President Pilar Goya Laza has written about the role national chemical societies need to play in a changing world. Titled ‘Synergy moving forwards’ Pilar emphasises the need to adapt to new technologies to improve communication – both within chemistry circles, but also to the public. She moreover underlines the need for societies to recognise their ‘supra-organisation’ role in representing all disciplines in chemistry – particularly in a time when the lines between disciplinary boundaries are increasingly blurry. Taking EuChemS as an example, Pilar highlights the need to promote a sense of community between Europeans chemists and scientists.
